The evolutionary defence mechanism that wakes one from sleep to full alertness in response to an unexpected sound kicked in at 3:30am this morning.

The sound was like something rubbing on glass, as if there was something at a window somewhere, but it wasn't coming from the direction of my bedroom window. It persisted for a few seconds, off and on, and then stopped. I lay awake listening for it for a while, but it didn't come back.

It wasn't a scuffling sound, so I don't think I have another rat sharing my living space. I hope I don't, anyway! The sound did seem too "big" to be a rat, as well.

Probably it was just one of my neighbours moving around in his or her flat. But I need to keep an ear out for the next few evenings just in case I do have another unwanted furry houseguest.
