The Earth has passed the arbitrary point in its solar orbit that separates two numbered blocks of days, bringing an end to the year that gave us the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics.

Let's see what the next block of 365 days has in store. The weather has cleared up, if nothing else.

A quiet start

I went for a morning stroll into town. There were very few people about, and very few shops open. It reminded me of the way that town centres used to be on Sundays when I was a kid, before the Sunday trading laws were relaxed.

There were a few places open, mostly cafés and convenience stores, one of the latter helping me out of my suddenly-desperate milk situation. Winter evenings kindle my love of hot, milky cocoa, so I get through milk at a fair rate at this time of year.

My walk home took me past the part of town near the railway station with a lot of pubs and bars. Things were a bit more animated there, with a few straggling revellers from last night still hanging around, and one poor chap lying passed out on the floor.
