Turns out that most modern hard disk drives (apart from Seagate's, for some reason) have a concept of "acoustic management". They can be set in "fast but noisy" mode, or "slower but quieter" mode. Some HDDs have a number of in-between settings.

It only took one hdparm -M 128 /dev/sda to make thalassa's HDD noticeably quieter. I haven't noticed any slowdown, either.
