I got an external USB HDD for making backups.

In the past, I've made backups of only my personal files and system configuration, onto CD, or into a directory on another computer. This external disk is sufficiently large that I can back up both chryseis and nyx in their entirety, meaning that if either of them die, they can be reconstructed just by copying the files back from the backup. No lengthy reinstallation, no worry that I've forgotten something vital; just partition a new disk, copy all the files back, write the boot sector, and I'm away.

The initial backups took quite a while, as chryseis predates USB 2. USB 1 is sloooooow. Still, from now on, it'll only need to back up files that have changes, which will be a lot faster.
