How do you explain the concept of sight to someone born blind?

You can't use words like "picture" or "image", as these words are dependent on a prior understanding of sight to have any meaning. You might be able to come up with an explanation involving a comparison with the "mind's eye", if the person has a mind's eye of some sort. (I don't know whether it's possible to have a mind's eye without sight; if it is, it must be fundamentally different from the mind's eye of a sighted person).

The best description of sight I can come up with is "a way of being aware of things without touching them, and without hearing them". To young blind child, it would probably seem like magic.
