Linux from Scratch

I have got to try this: http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/

I don't intend for it to replace Debian GNU/Linux as my primary operating system. I love Debian to bits. I just think that putting together a hand-rolled Linux-based operating system would be a really neat hobby.

I won't do things exactly as in the LFS manual. This is going to be my system, after all. Major things that I will do differently:

  1. No /bin/bash. A generic /bin/sh will be the standard script interpreter on my system. /usr/local/bin/zsh will be my login shell. Bash will be installed as /usr/local/bin/bash if I need to use a program that requires it. Otherwise, my system will be bash-less.
  2. Replace the usual System V init with Richard Gooch's supremely elegant init system.

Right, time to break out the credit card and buy a second HDD. I was going to get one a while ago to play with FreeBSD, but decided against it.
