Who next?

The weekend's big news has been, of course, Matt Smith's departure from Doctor Who at the end of the year. (Probably other things have happened this weekend as well, but what could possibly be more important?)

The Internet rumour engine has spooled up and will be operating at 100% until we get a casting announcement. But, my thoughts regarding whom Steven Moffat should call?

Believe it or not, I don't have a single suggestion.

I simply want the role to go to a first-rate actor or actress.

Since 2005, we've had three fantastic leading men. Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant and Matt Smith have all been superb in the role while also all being utterly different. The role of the Doctor is a blank slate. There are no particular boxes to tick. The next lead's interpretation of the Doctor will doubtless be different to anything we've seen before. We simply need an individual with the acting chops to make the Doctor believable, watchable and wonderful.

A victory of sorts

Microwave flapjacks #2

I made a second batch of microwave flapjacks yesterday.

Four flapjacks from my second batch. Tastier and less crumbly than the first batch.

Chopping dates is a gooey business. I dislike goo. But I do like dates.

Today's train journeys took me to the end of chapter 19 of The Hunger Games.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a ridiculous pan-Europe singing contest to watch.

I finished chapter 17 of The Hunger Games on the train yesterday.

I'm really appreciating the "young adult" sensibilities of the story. The events that have been taking place are not at all pleasant, and I do think I'd find it rather too much if the author were not restrained by the limits necessary for a younger audience.

Thank $DEITY for the NHS

The National Health Service has now saved two members of my family over the past eighteen months. I am truly thankful for its existence.

Universal health care is both a blessing and, frankly, a human right. As a society, we look after each other. No-one who needs health care should have to go without. Ever.

Visiting Panem

I'm about a quarter of the way through The Hunger Games. A few other adults I know had read it and recommended it, and it was only £3 on the Kindle, so I decided to have a go. I'm reading it on the train during my commute to pass the time.

I like the writing style and the pacing. Using the events that Katniss experiences as "excuses" to talk about her past and the world in general is a nice way of gradually revealing information without having to resort to pages of expository infodump. As dystopian settings go, this one seems particularly unpleasant; it's what might result if Augustus Caesar were handed future tech and a copy of the collected works of Kim Jong-il.

Classic literature it may not be, but it's definitely a page-turner. Shortly before leaving work today, I found myself thinking "not long to go until I can find out what's going on with Katniss".

Microwave cake experiment #8
cake experiments

This was a retry of experiment #7 with the recipe tweaked to try to make it rise properly. The changes were:

  1. ground almond quantity reduced from two teaspoons to one;
  2. milk quantity reduced to two teaspoons as per the successful chocolate cakes.
Cake experiment #8's consistency. It rose better than experiment #7, but perhaps not as well as the chocolate cakes.
It rose better than experiment #7 did, though perhaps not as well as the chocolate cakes. I think that ground almonds are just too heavy for these single-serve cakes.

Tasted great, though!
