Glorious fan version of the Flight theme from Xenogears. It's a straight orchestral arrangement, using a combination of synthesized orchestra and live instruments.

It's a little over a year since I last linked to a fan arrangement of this piece. As I mentioned in a response to a comment against that entry, I think the melody has a bittersweet quality. Thinking about it, I'm not entirely sure whether it's the melody itself, or the connotations, though; if memory serves (and it may well not, it's been years), the piece was used as the backing music during a heroic sacrifice scene in the game.

From what I can remember, it's first use in the game is when ChuChu has his/her limiter removed and goes out to take on Achtzehn to buy everyone time while Maria gets over her mental crisis over where her Gear comes from etc...

Later on it's mainly used as a theme music power up for Maria (and sometimes Emeralda), just as 'Leftover of the Dreams of the Strong' is for Bart.

Nice arrangement though. Ever noticed how few Mitsuda arrangements there are? (Chrono Trigger notwithstanding).

The Achtzehn scene was the one I was thinking of; the way I remembered it was that Achtzehn's pilot was Maria's father, and ended up self-detonating so that Maria didn't have to kill him. That video indicates that my memories weren't quite correct, but close.

I reckon Xenogears could be done as a 26-episode anime, y'know. It would need trimming a lot (e.g. of the protagonists, drop everyone apart from Fei, Elly, Citan and Bart), but the core of the story (Gnosticism IN SPACE!) isn't actually particularly complicated. It only seems complicated because of the out-of-order nature of the revelations, and the stories associated with the secondary characters. (If memory serves).

Ever noticed how few Mitsuda arrangements there are?

Not many Sakuraba arrangements either. Uematsu and Kondo get all the love.
