Rogue Galaxy, part 6
I play RPGs so you don't have to! Previous instalments: part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5.

The "rules" I mention in these posts are, of course, taken from The Grand List of Console Role-Playing Game Clichés.

Dorgenark's crew track the destination of the Daytron ship containing the Great Tablet. It's heading for Rosa, Jaster's home planet. There's an excavation site in the Sylvazard desert, not far from Salgin; chances are that it's being taken there.

Out on deck, away from the others, something strange is happening to Kisala. She starts to glow, and her body becomes intangible for a few moments. By chance, Lilika happens to wander out on deck and sees everything. Concerned, she asks Kisala what's going on. Kisala responds that it's a warning of some kind. It's apparently happened a few times recently. She implores Lilika not to tell the others.

Back on Zerard, Daytron's president Valkog (the guy whose face we didn't see in the cutscene at the beginning of part 3) unveils the corporation's latest battleship. Impressed, the Longardian Chairman orders 300 units, over Admiral Banarge's protests. From Daytron's point of view, war is very good for business. It is unlikely that they intend to use Eden's riches to bring peace to the universe...

Dr. Poccachio sits at his desk, working. A visitor walks through the office door. Z-O-M-G, it's the hyper-lovely MIO! And she's, like, holding a totally high-tech computer data chip! (I'll stop now, I don't think I can maintain MIO-speak for more than two sentences...) Turns out that she's been doing some computer hacking for Pocacchio, obtaining data that he needs. Maybe her ditzy public persona is all just an act. As they talk, Pocacchio mentions MIO's childhood friendship with his son Mark.

The Dorgenark party disembark at Rosa. Jaster is happy to be home, and wishes he had some time to catch up with his friends before heading out into the desert. Jupis is less enamoured with the place; he doesn't like sand, and the warm air is drying his skin out.

The path to the excavation site through the desert is teeming with monsters that are much stronger than the ones we met in part 1. Good job they didn't invade Salgin back then, or Jaster and Desert Claw would both have been toast. Jaster urges his companions to hurry so they don't arrive too late, apparently oblivious to Rule 163.

The desert ruins are surrounded on all sites by colossi; the overall effect is that the aesthetic of Rosa's ancient civilization was a blend of Hellenistic and Arabian. Nice.

President Valkog and his evil PA, Norma, arrive at the ruins. Jaster, Kisala and Zegram peer around a corner (one by one, in a very cartoony fashion) to see what's going on. The Daytron team lower the Great Tablet into the excavation site. Something activates inside it, and three pedestals rise up from the surface. A holographic image is projected from each pedestal: a set of scales, a crab, and a lion. Valkog remarks that each image must correspond to a "Key Piece"; the Key Pieces must be found and placed on the appropriate pedestals. Once that has been achieved, the Great Tablet will reveal its secrets.

Alongside Valkog and Norma is a decrepit-looking old man with a mechanical eyepiece, Professor Izel. Even before he's introduced, it's clear from looking at him that he's a mad scientist. (He'd have fitted in well with the Gundam Wing engineers). He's been involved with the same super-soldier project as Rosencaster, and proudly unveils his creation:

This guy looks like a Tetsuya Nomura character: emo/goth aesthetic, a black sword with an intricately-detailed grip, and a mask that's half white and half black, so he resembles the characters from the heavy-handed anti-racism episode of the 1960s Star Trek. With his heightened senses, Seed detects Jaster's party and launches a devastating attack. He moves quickly and hits hard. In fact, he's far too good for the party to defeat. So it's fortunate when Desert Claw shows up, causes a distraction, and enables the party to flee.

Desert Claw vanishes as quickly as he had appeared, refusing to divulge any information about himself to Jaster, much to his (and our) frustration. Our heroes return to Dorgenark and explain to Dorgengoa about the three Key Pieces. Dorgengoa orders the crew to obtain them before Daytron do. But where to look?
